Over 60 students shuffled through the doors of Scales Chapel as the speaker was about to begin her presentation. Senior Producer of CNET News at CBS Interactive and former producer of ABC, Yahoo! and Ustream, Mariel Myers has a wide variety of experience in broadcasting, news and social media.
Myers was asked on behalf of the Lambda Pi Eta club to speak on Tuesday, May 28. She shared her background in broadcasting and how she achieved the position of senior producer. Myers said she always knew that she had a love for “live broadcasting.” Since she found her passion at a young age, she began interning for different broadcasting companies during her high school years. Myers referred to herself as an “intern junky.” While many of her friends toured Europe during their summer vacations, Myers applied for multiple summer internships.
After gaining experience from local broadcasting stations around the Los Angeles area, Myers was confident in what she wanted to do — and not do. Myers was 100 percent positive that she did not want to be on-air talent. “I was afraid I was going to receive a phone call from my mother every day regarding my outfit or my hair being messed up while on camera, and I knew that I could not handle that,” she said. From that moment on, Myers knew that she definitely liked working behind the scenes. Once Myers graduated from UCLA with degrees in political science and communication, she went straight to work for CBS in Los Angeles.
Throughout her presentation, Myers answered questions from the audience. In response to a question regarding internship advice, Myers said, “Take as many opportunities you can to do an internship and once you are an intern, remember that you will never gain the access you will receive after your internship is over.”
Myers’ laid-back and humble personality enabled her to connect with the students and faculty.
“No matter how many jobs you have or where you go in life, be thankful for the journey that is taking you there,” Myers remarked.
